Goodbye!

The time has come to bid adieu to the Idle Wife blog. I know, I know. I said it a million times that the inspiration would come again. "Soon," I said, "I'll have the energy to come up with another brilliant DIY project! Soon! Soon!"

I can't even say I'll have the desire to share fixations or desktop backgrounds with you again. I'm still very much active on the internet. It's not like I don't have the time for it. I just don't want to right now.

The DIY and home improvement blogs I used to draw a lot of inspiration from have become more about sponsorships, book deals, and having a team of crafters at your disposal, and I feel like everything has gotten extremely monotonous. I don't want to be just another blog with the same project in a different colour (and I definitely don't want to take my one successful project and continue using it as the starting point for every subsequent project on my blog). So since I feel as though there's nothing more I can add to this party, the time has come for me to go.

At any rate, I'm not going to shut the blog doors completely. This site will remain long after I'm gone and if you still have a question or problem about the bath bombs or... well that's the only one you all care about, I will receive notifications and I'll reply as quickly as I can.

You can still find me Pinning feverishly, but Facebook and Twitter will be silent.

Thank you for reading this humble blog and taking an interest in the stuff that I made. I had a fun ride!

I've enjoyed reading your blog for several years and followed you on Bloglovin. I've been writing on FB and discussing exactly what you wrote about above with blogging friends - the ridiculous amount of sponsored posts, the "corporate blogs", etc... I know so many people who have stopped blogging for the exact same reasons you listed. It makes me sad because these blogs (like yours), written with one unique voice, are the blogs that I really loved reading. And these blogs are disappearing very quickly.

Thanks for the comment, TrueBlue. It actually brought a little tear to my eye because this shift in the way blogs are being presented is really very anti-blog and doesn't represent the true culture of blogging as it was when it was first conceived.

I have to add that it also started to feel extremely cutthroat and ruthless. I guess it wouldn't come off that way at first, but I've gotten very tired of seeing my photos and my tutorials on larger blogs. I've actually given up trying to get them to reduce their picture stealing to one at the most due to a lot of unresponsiveness on their end.

It all feels very unfair to me when I'm the one coming up with the content, on my own, in my home, with my own money and resources while these larger blogs get the readership, the sponsorship, and have a team of people creating these copycat posts to begin with. I feel as though I've given them enough to make money off of now and I don't want to give them any more. (That's not to say that all the blogs I confronted were like this. There were some that corrected attributions or removed the photos, but the fact that they're not being thorough enough in the first place and I'm only finding them out by accident, tells me that there are probably a lot more instances of this happening than not happening.)

I think that's my main reason for leaving, and it's the harsh reality of my blogging experience. Blogs are turning into the new magazine stand, and I don't want any part of it. I'm very disillusioned by these blogs that seem very personal but are large teams working together to collaborate. And now I take everything I've read in blogs with a grain of salt where, only a few years ago, I really trusted and relied on the blogger opinion. These days, you can never be sure whose idea it really was or what corporation is benefitting from it.

I am way behind the times on writing to you since you stopped blogging and had no idea what your experience had been. The very idea of stealing your content! Commercialization and commerce at its most disgusting. I didn't blog at all last year and have been writing a few posts this year just because I took some time off from my job that I loathe. You have always seems like a kindred soul out there and I still have my calendar. It's so beautiful whether it matches the days of the year or not, it's always around! Are you on instagram? I follow some beautiful photographers but there again I am a lone wolf. I swear I could post a photo similar to one that gets thousands of likes and I hover around 20-30. Some people have it and some lack. Oh well. But I do love the community. Kindness abounds and it is easy to stay with authenticity and avoid commercialized ones. You can find me at ds8588. Would love to see you there!
